Why Helga/Salazar?
It is characteristic of Hufflepuffs to be kind and accepting, and so it must be assumed that the house founder was no different. Though Salazar could not have relied on Helga's intellect, she could have been an ideal confidante, as the other founders might have been critical of his thoughts.
Helga Hufflepuff
Helga was the founder of Hufflepuff House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. According to the Sorting Hat, she came from "valley broad," which, according to the Harry Potter Lexicon, could be Wales. She also possessed a cup; it is allegedly a horcrux containing one-seventh of Lord Voldemort's soul.
Hufflepuffs are known to be "just and loyal," as well as accepting, because Helga had no preferences in regards to the students she hoped to teach.
The symbol for Hufflepuff is a badger, and the house colors are yellow and black.
Salazar Slytherin
Salazar was the founder of Slytherin House at Hogwarts. He is said to have come from "fen", which, according to the Harry Potter Lexicon, could be the east of England, East Anglia, and in "particular Norfolk". A fen is a marshy region.
Slytherins are known to be cunning and often cruel, as well as prejudiced against people who are not pureblooded. Salazar eventually left the other three founders because of a disagreement about the latter characteristic. Lord Voldemort, the Heir of Slytherin, hoped to continue Salazar's work of purging the school of those whom he thought were unfit to learn magic. Salazar created the Chamber of Secrets, in which he hid a basilisk, to aid him in this task.
Salazar possessed a ring and a locket that, centuries later, became horcruxes, each containing one-seventh of Voldemort's soul.
The symbol for Slytherin is a snake, and the house colors are green and silver.
Why is this fanlisting not in the normal relationships category?
The Sorting Hat does not give sufficient evidence of Helga and Salazar specifically coming in contact with each other; it merely suggests that all four founders interacted as a group. However, if you visit the extras page, you will see that Helga and Salazar make a plausible fanon couple.
About the Site
I had never even considered the pairing of Helga/Salazar until I found this trailer by Phoenixproductions05 for this fanfiction by HighVoltage. It made me realize that it was quite possible for something to have occurred between them romantically for the aforementioned reasons.
The name "Valley and Fen" was chosen because Helga is said to have come from "valley broad" and Salazar from "fen".
Valley and Fen was applied for at the end of 2006, and was approved January 30, 2007. This is my first fanlisting, and so credit goes to my good friend Valerie for helping me get everything up and running.
